Interview: 2016, July 20. Tragon @OccultBlackMetal zine

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Tragon: We are currently finishing the recording of our second full length album “In Full Regalia” and also working on new songs for a split release in 2017 and a third album.

2. Currently you are working on a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
Tragon: “Admire The Cosmos Black” was an album we hadn’t planned and contained songs from different eras of the band. This time we had a more clear vision and there was only one main composer, which makes the songs more cohesive and homogenous. We also went a little more aggressive, there are songs in the new album that offer more time to headbang than what we used to have in the past.

3. Your lyrics cover some Ancient Hellenic Pride and Anti Christian themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics?
Tragon: These are only some of the subjects that generally interest me and I spend time studying. The band is my preferred channel to speak about those specific issues. We are an anti-religious band, and since we happen to live in a Christian country our lyrics are antichristian. When I am not touching this subject, I either speak of the Ancient Greek world (we were always fascinated from the Greek mythology, and to be honest with you, I would personally prefer the “official” religion of Greece, if there has to be one, to be the ethnic mythos of Greece instead of the ethnic mythos of Judea that currently is) or the history of Vlad Tepes a.k.a. the “Dracula”.

4. I know that the band was named after ‘Vlad Tepes’, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this historical character?
Tragon: When we started the band we were fascinated by the stories around Vlad, both the historic one, as well as the fictitious “Dracula” of Bram Stoker. Who doesn’t like brutal heroes who impale their enemies and vampire stories, right? Above all, the title “Lord Impaler” felt really fitting for a black metal band and this was the deciding factor…

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Tragon: Lord Impaler have only played live 3 times, the last one was 2 months ago, and the one before that was 16 years ago. Our latest show, supporting Rotting Christ, was certainly the best we have given, a traditional black metal show with blood, corpse paint and a great atmosphere.

6. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Tragon: We are in the talks for some shows in November but we don’t have any dates booked right now. We keep our ears open for opportunities to play more shows.

7. Recently you where a part of a split with ‘Dizziness’ and ‘Hell Poemer’, what are your thoughts on the other bands that had participated on the album?
Tragon: They are both an excellent sample of Greek black metal. Each one has developed their own brand, Dizziness are closer to the primitive Hellenic Pagan black (alongside cult bands like Nergal and Athos), while Hell Poemer are closer to the classic Greek black metal sound but expand on it in modern ways. Worth checking their other works.

8. Also on the split you had done a cover of Bathory’s “Call From the Grave”, what was the decision behind doing your own version of this song?
Tragon: Whenever we do a cover we are picking on songs that we would have done differently. We don’t really see the point in re-making a song of a band that plays similar music with us and just performing their song as it is. With “Call…” we felt we could really make it shine in our style and so we went for it.

9. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your current music by fans of black metal?
Tragon: People around the globe seem to genuinely enjoy our music. We’ve got a lot of positive feedback and it’s only getting better over the years. Of course there has been the occasional bad review every now and then, which we welcome and appreciate (that’s how you learn you need to improve usually), and it mostly boils down to “we’re not original enough”, which I am fine with: we never tried to innovate much, we’re playing the music we like to listen to. There are bands like Virus or Dødheimsgård who try to re-invent themselves every album. We are not this kind of band.

10. When will the new album be released?
Tragon: I really cannot give you an estimate. We hope to finish it in 2016, but even if all go as planned, it will then depend on any labels that may express interest in it. Generally, we hope for a release this year.

11. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Tragon: We have always been fans of Norwegian and Swedish black metal, and it shows. This isn’t something we try to do, it has become a personal style of composing (as far as I can tell at least, from working closely with Lord Nebulah, our main composer). Bands that shaped us, hmm, I will say Emperor, Immortal, Dark Funeral, Marduk, Satyricon, but again influences aren’t something we consciously choose, and we’re listening to lots of different stuff that might have crept in our minds in some way. Currently I am listening to Behexen’s latest album and recently added Imperium Infernalis’ “Imago Dei” on rotation. This last one is another excellent sample of contemporary Greek black metal.

12. How would you describe your views on Occultism?
Tragon: I am living in the age of logic, which means no gods, no devils, no fairies. However I do find occult theories somewhat fascinating and when I have time to spare I do read occult books. Whenever I reference anything religious in my lyrics, they mask something deeper, they are just a symbolic link to what I really want to talk about. For example, Satan is the rebellious free man, I am not a Satanist, but you will see him mentioned A LOT in our third album…

13. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We recently uploaded a compilation named “Demology – The Decade of Obscurity”, which is free to get and covers our first decade, our demo era. Οι Lord Impaler είναι μια ελληνική melodic Black Metal μπάντα, με έντονες τις Σκανδιναβικές Black Metal επιρροές αλλά και μπάντες όπως οι Dark Funeral, Meyhem, Immortal.
Δημιουργήθηκαν στην Καστοριά στο τέλος του 1998, και έχουν ένα full length album το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε το 2010 με τίτλο “Admire The Cosmos Black”, αφού πριν από αυτή τη κυκλοφορία ‘πρόλαβαν’ να μπουν σε παύση για κάποια χρόνια, αλλά και να κυκλοφορήσουν αρκετά demos, κάτι το οποίο συνεχίστηκε (η κυκλοφορία demos) μέχρι και σχεδόν τους πρώτους μήνες του 2016.
Αυτή την εποχή έχουν στα σκαριά τη κυκλοφορία του δεύτερου LP τους.
Πριν από λίγες μέρες το Rock Overdose ήρθε σε επαφή με τον τραγουδιστή των Lord Impaler, Tragon και είχε μια φιλική κουβέντα μαζί του σε ότι αφορά στη μπάντα αλλά και στην επερχόμενη εμφάνιση τους μαζί με τους Rotting Christ στη Καστόρια την ερχόμενη Παρασκευή στις 8.30 το βραδάκι στο Prague Draft live stage.

Rock Overdose: Σας καλωσορίζουμε στο Rock Overdose!

Tragon: Γεια σας. Χαίρομαι που τα ξαναλέμε!

Rock Overdose: Ξεκινώντας θα θέλαμε να μας συστήσετε τους μουσικούς που αποτελούνε τη μπάντα και να μας πείτε με λίγα λόγια για την ιστορία σας.

Tragon: Αυτή τη στιγμή η μπάντα αποτελείται από τους Tragon (φωνή), Lord Nebulah (κιθάρα), Phlegethon (μπάσο), Aenaon (κιθάρα), Nodens (τύμπανα). Ξεκινήσαμε πίσω στο μακρινό 1998, και μετά από αρκετές αλλαγές στο line-up και τη μουσική μας ταυτότητα βγήκαμε από την demo εποχή μας το 2011 οπότε και κυκλοφορήσαμε το ντεμπούτο μας “Admire The Cosmos Black”. Έκτοτε έχουμε μια σταθερή πορεία προς τα πάνω και προσπαθούμε κάθε χρόνο να παράγουμε και κάτι νέο, με πιο πρόσφατη κυκλοφορία ένα 3-way split με τους Αθηναίους Dizziness και τους Γιαννιώτες Hell Poemer, ονόματι “Carved By The Winds Eternal”.

Rock Overdose: Αλήθεια, ποιός ο λόγος που δεν κάνατε live επί 16 χρόνια;

Tragon: Κυρίως τα προβλήματα με το line-up. Αμέσως μετά την κυκλοφορία του “Admire…” μείναμε μόλις δυο μέλη, οπότε μας ήταν πολύ δύσκολο να βρούμε τη δύναμη και τα άτομα για να το κάνουμε.

Rock Overdose: Στο ενεργητικό σας έχετε μια συνεργασία με τον drummer των Mayhem, πως προέκυψε;

Tragon: Όταν κανονίζαμε να ανεβούμε στη Νορβηγία για να κάνουμε το “Admire…” ρωτήσαμε τον Knut αν θεωρούσε πιθανό να παίξει τα τύμπανα ο Hellhammer, δεδομένου ότι έχουν παρτίδες από τους Arcturus. Φυσικά η ερώτηση έγινε μεταξύ σοβαρού και αστείου, αλλά ο Knut όντως ρώτησε και ο Hellhammer όντως έπαιξε.

Rock Overdose: Ποια τα μελλοντικά σχέδια σας;

Tragon: Αυτή τη στιγμή έχουμε την προσοχή μας στραμμένη στο live με τους Rotting Christ. Αν πάει καλά δεν αποκλείεται να κυνηγήσουμε κάποιες εμφανίσεις ακόμα. Μετά θα πέσουμε με τα μούτρα στην ολοκλήρωση του δεύτερου full length μας ονόματι “In Full Regalia”, με την ελπίδα να το έχουμε έτοιμο φέτος. Παράλληλα έχουμε ήδη αρχίσει να δουλεύουμε και σε νέο υλικό.

Rock Overdose: Ποια η σχέση σας με τον χριστιανισμό και ποια η φιλοσοφία της μουσικής σας;

Tragon: Οι Lord Impaler είναι για μένα ένα κανάλι που μου επιτρέπει να εξωτερικεύω διάφορες σκέψεις μου, καθώς και να «προκαλώ» συζητήσεις, όπως άλλωστε νομίζω πρέπει να κάνει κάθε τέχνη που σέβεται τον εαυτό της. Οι στίχοι μας είναι κατά βάση αντιθρησκευτικοί, και λόγω του κοινωνικού μας πλαισίου ειδικότερα, αντιχριστιανικοί. Από εκεί και πέρα βέβαια δεν λείπουν οι αναφορές στον αρχαιοελληνικό κόσμο αλλά και στην επική ιστορία του Vlad Tepes.

Rock Overdose: Είστε μια από τις καλύτερες μπάντες της Καστοριάς, πιστεύετε πως αν ήσασταν σε άλλη πόλη θα ήσασταν πιο γνωστοί ή όταν μιλάμε για underground μπάντες ο τόπος δεν παίζει μεγάλο ρόλο;

Tragon: Ο τόπος παίζει ρόλο μόνο στην δυνατότητα που σου παρέχει να βρίσκεις μουσικούς και ευκαιρίες να παίξεις ζωντανά. Από εκεί και πέρα, το internet έχει ισοπεδώσει τέτοια προβλήματα.

Rock Overdose: Πως προέκυψε το split που κάνατε πρόσφατα με δύο άλλες μπάντες;

Tragon: Ήταν μια ιδέα του Σταύρου (Dizziness), εμείς ήμασταν κάπως μπλοκαρισμένοι πέρυσι οπότε δεν είχαμε τη δυνατότητα να δουλέψουμε σε πιο μεγάλο project και αποφασίσαμε να μην αφήσουμε τον καιρό να πάει χαμένος. Όταν πια έπεσε στο τραπέζι η πρόταση για 3η μπάντα, αμέσως το μυαλό μας πήγε στους Hell Poemer που τους είχαμε δει με τους Varathron και πιστεύαμε ότι θα πήγαιναν γάντι, όπως και έγινε.

Rock Overdose: Μιας και δεν κάνατε live τόσο καιρό, τα όποια κέρδη είχατε ως συγκρότημα προέκυπταν από τις πωλήσεις των δίσκων σας. Ποια η άποψη σας για την πειρατεία;

Tragon: Κατ’ αρχήν η πειρατεία είναι κλοπή. Το αν κλέβεις από την μπάντα, από την εταιρία, από τον διανομέα, δεν ξέρω κι εγώ από ποιον, λίγη σημασία έχει. Από εκεί και πέρα όμως, για τις underground μπάντες ο #1 εχθρός είναι η αφάνεια, οπότε δεν χρειάζεται παράνοια. Σαφώς όμως για να μπορέσει μια μπάντα να τα βγάλει πέρα και να συνεχίσει να παράγει μουσική χρειάζεται υλική υποστήριξη. Το κόστος σπάνια είναι πάνω από ένα επιπλέον ποτό για τον οπαδό, όμως μπορεί να κάνει τεράστια διαφορά για μια μπάντα. Βάλτε λοιπόν το χέρι στην τσέπη και ΣΤΗΡΙΞΤΕ ΤΗΝ ΤΟΠΙΚΗ ΣΚΗΝΗ ΣΑΣ!

Rock Overdose: Σε λίγες μέρες θα κάνετε το πρώτο live σας ανοίγοντας για τους Rotting Christ. Προϊδεάστε μας για το τι θα ακολουθήσει.

Tragon: Κοίταξε, 16 χρόνια από το προηγούμενο live είναι πολλά, ο κόσμος έχει πολλές προσδοκίες, οπότε έχουμε όπως είναι λογικό αρκετό στρες. Πιστεύω πάντως πως δεν θα απογοητεύσουμε κανέναν. Από εκεί και πέρα, είμαστε παραδοσιακοί blacksters οπότε μπορείτε να περιμένετε καρφιά, μπογιά και αγνό black metal. Δείτε το videoclip μας για το “Admire The Cosmos Black” και θα πάρετε μια γεύση. Όσο για το setlist, έχει κάτι από τα παλιά, αλλά θα ακούσετε και ένα χορταστικό μέρος του δίσκου που έρχεται.

Rock Overdose: Και τέλος, δυο λόγια προς τους αναγνώστες και το κοινό της Καστοριάς.

Tragon: Ξέρουμε ότι οι καιροί είναι δύσκολοι, αλλά ελπίζουμε οι καστοριανοί να έρθουν και να στηρίξουν το event, γιατί κακά τα ψέματα venues δεν υπάρχουν και αν χαθούν τα 1-2 μαγαζιά που κάνουν ακόμα live θα έρθουν πολύ πιο δύσκολες μέρες και θα πρέπει να τρέχουμε στις γύρω πόλεις για να δούμε ένα show. Αυτά εν πολλοίς, και κλείνω επαναλαμβάνοντας ΣΤΗΡΙΞΤΕ ΤΗΝ ΤΟΠΙΚΗ ΣΑΣ ΣΚΗΝΗ!

Interview: 2016, March 6. Tragon @ Metal Invader

Since recently things are in motion in Lord Impaler’s camp, Metal Invader seized the change and talked with the band’s frontman Tragon. In this interview, Tragon elaborates on the band’s upcoming releases, their future concert plans and so much more! Take a look!

Good evening and welcome to Metal Invader! I hope everything’s fine!

You are a band that has several years of presence in the Greek Black Metal scene. You have released several demos, splits and a full length album entitled “Admire the Cosmos Black”. How do you think time has treated you all these years? Are you satisfied with your career so far?

Tragon: We’ve definitely had our mishaps, it’s actually quite reasonable after so many years, but overall we have no complaints. As you mentioned before, we were able to produce several releases and of course we continue walking this path. This is the essential purpose of any art, to create, to offer and if it’s reciprocated by the crowd, it gives you something back to carry on doing what you do.

As far as I know, at the moment you are working on your second album. Have you finished the recordings or the mixing / mastering process?

Tragon: Currently we are still recording. It has taken longer than we expected because we work a little differently than we did in the past and at some point we decided to take it all from the beginning in order to deliver the best result. As band that’s what we prefer, our work to have quality rather than quantity. Nonetheless, we are on track and if all goes well our work will be finished by the upcoming summer.

When you are thinking of releasing the record and via which company?

Tragon: It is too early to know. We will send some demos to some labels and we will move accordingly. Especially if a label will be involved and we don’t have to do things alone, then the release date does not depend solely on us.

Talk to us about the record’s creation process… Which synthesis pattern did you follow and how easy or difficult was it for you? Did you encounter any problems?

Tragon: Usually everything starts from an idea on guitar; we take it from there and expand it as far as possible without pressuring it, in order for it to become a skeleton of riffs that flows smoothly. After that, Nodens will clothe the pieces with drums, I’ll work ideas in the lyrics and vocal lines and slowly everything is transformed into a song. Of course nothing is considered finished until we do the mixing. For “In Full Regalia” now, the biggest share of load is shouldered by Lord Nebulah because when we started working we were just the two of us in the group, but now, having a full line-up enables us to easily find ideas, to filter things etc.

In the record “Admire the Cosmos Black” drums were handled by legend Hellhammer, whose musical course is enviable, to say the least. Will a cooperation of a similar caliber take place in your new effort?

Tragon: Only if it occurs naturally. We don’t try to engage the crowd by having big names in our records. If we feel that a particular musician will give that “magic” in a piece, we’ll surely consider it. And of course that’s something that doesn’t entirely rely on us. So far, however, there is no such cooperation for the next record.

Apart from the upcoming second full length disk, a split album titled “Carved By The Winds Eternal” is expected to be released, in which Hell Poemer and Dizzeness will participate. How did this happen?

Tragon: We had met the guys a long time ago and kept contact, so when the idea was created, we instantly agreed. In no case is this considered a “marriage of interest” since we are bands with matching style and switching from one band to the other does not surprise the listener.

The release of the split is expected in late March – early April… Have you agreed on a specific date or everything is cloudy at the moment?

Tragon: This depends on the labels that are responsible for this release. As soon as they provide us with a specific date, we will announce it to you, but keep in mind that it doesn’t depend on us. Our part ended when we handed the mastered editions.

In order to promote (as I understand) the release of the split, you released the track “The Fire That Burns” on 22^nd of February. It’s one of the two pieces that will be included in the split record. What’s the feedback you get from your fans? Are you satisfied?

Tragon: The track goes well. People liked it and that’s pleasing. This was the first time we handled the mixing / mastering process, so we’re expecting as much feedback as possible so that we can improve further.

On May 13^th you will play along with Rotting Christ in Kastoria! How do you feel about it?

Tragon: We are very happy, of course. Presenting our music live is something that we eagerly wanted to do and it’s something our listeners were asking from us for a long time now. We’re a little bit anxious because we want everything to be perfect, but I believe that no one will be disappointed.

Apart from this concert, do you have something else on your mind; perhaps a tour, inside / outside Greece, to support your upcoming record?

Tragon: We will try to play other show but at this moment I cannot say anything with certainty.

How do you about the Greek Black Metal scene nowadays (even if you walk in more Nordic trails compared to the local groups)? Is there a future?

Tragon: The Greek scene has always been strong and special, and definitely has a future. The fact that in previous years its value wasn’t weighted as it should perhaps worked positively and in favor of the scene, since it has not been commercialized as the scenes of Sweden and Norway, and maintains its sentimentality and edge. There are now countless bands producing quality music and have character, something missing from scenes abroad.

Tragon: I’ll probably sound tedious and cliché, but support your local bands. The dinosaurs and monsters we all grew up with are slowly retiring. If you don’t give power to new bands to lift their heads I fear that we will end up with a dead genre and we will only listen to what big labels want us to. Όπως έχω δηλώσει και σε άλλες συνεντεύξεις, είμαι ιδιαίτερα χαρούμενος όταν παίρνω συνέντευξη από κάποιο συγκρότημα που εδρεύει στην επαρχία. Αυτή τη φορά είχα την τιμή να μιλήσω με τους “Lord Impaler” ένα black metal από τη Καστοριά, το οποίο είναι από τα λίγα ελληνικά συγκροτήματα που δεν έχει εγκαταλείψει τις Σκανδιναβικές καταβολές τις Black Metal σκηνής. Επικοινώνησα με τον Tragon και τον Lord Nebulah, οι οποίοι απάντησαν σε όλες μου τις ερωτήσεις:

Πείτε μου δύο λόγια για το συγκρότημα.

Tragon: Οι Lord Impaler δημιουργήθηκαν το 1998 στην Καστοριά και μέσα σε αυτά τα χρόνια που υπάρχουμε καταφέραμε να κυκλοφορήσουμε 4 demo, 2 split και έναν full length δίσκο και συνεχίζουμε δυναμικά. Το συγκρότημα αυτή τη στιγμή αποτελείται από τους Tragon (φωνή), Lord Nebulah (κιθάρα), Phlegethon (μπάσο), Nodens (τύμπανα) και Aenaon(κιθάρα).

Ποια είναι η θεματολογία των στίχων σας;

Tragon: Κατά βάση στους στίχους καταπιάνομαι με την αντιχριστιανική φιλοσοφία και με παγανιστικά θέματα. Δεν λείπουν φυσικά και οι αναφορές στον VladTepes. Χρησιμοποιώ βιβλικές εικόνες και αποκρυφισμό αλλά συνήθως από κάτω κρύβεται κάτι βαθύτερο.

Ποιες οι μουσικές σας επιρροές;

Tragon: Το παραδοσιακό black metal και κυρίως η σκανδιναβική σχολή. Satyricon, Emperor, Darkthrone, τέτοια πράγματα. Όχι ότι ξεχνάμε τις καταβολές μας φυσικά. Αν δεν άκουγα το Non Serviam των Rotting Christπίσω στο μακρινό 1994 ίσως να μην είχα ασχοληθεί ποτέ με το black metal.

Lord Nebulah: Από κλασικό black (Emperor, Dark Funeral, Taake) μέχρι κλασική μουσική. Οτιδήποτε μπορεί να ξυπνήσει την καλλιτεχνική μου φύση θα το ακούσω.

Πόσο δύσκολο είναι για μια μπάντα που εδρεύει στην επαρχία να προωθήσει τη δουλειά της;

Tragon: Τώρα πια δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα δύσκολο. Έχει σαφώς κάποιες δυσκολίες στο να κάνεις έναν κύκλο και να δικτυωθείς και φυσικά στο να δημιουργήσεις κάποιες καταστάσεις που απαιτούν φυσική παρουσία του κόσμου που θα σε στηρίξει, όπως π.χ. κάποιο live ή festival, αλλά από εκεί και πέρα το internet έχει κλείσει την ψαλίδα σε τεράστιο βαθμό. Ο καθένας πια μπορεί να προβληθεί σε ένα παγκόσμιο μέσο και να επικοινωνήσει με ανθρώπους από όλο τον πλανήτη, οπότε το πού βρίσκεσαι δεν παίζει και τόσο μεγάλο ρόλο.

Ποια η εμπειρία σας από την ηχογράφηση των δύο πρώτων δίσκων σας;

Lord Nebulah: Μάθαμε ουσιαστικά πως είναι να δημιουργείς μουσική. Γίναμε καλύτεροι, δουλεύουμε πιο σωστά και αποδοτικά και φυσικά δίνουμε πλέον περισσότερη προσοχή στη λεπτομέρεια.

Συνδέεται ο πνευματισμός με τη μουσική σας και τη Black metal σκηνή γενικότερα;

Tragon: Δεν θα το έλεγα. Ναι μεν το black metal έχει αυτές τις καταβολές και αυτή την συγγένεια με το occult, όμως η δική μας μουσική και οι στίχοι δεν σχετίζονται. Δεν είναι μουσική διαλογισμού ή υπέρβασης. Είναι μουσική για να πωρωθείς όχι για να κάνεις ενδοσκόπηση.

Lord Nebulah: Η μουσική μας είναι καθαρά θέμα έμπνευσης, δεν έχουμε κάποιο τελετουργικό που μας βοηθάει όταν δημιουργούμε, απλά δουλεύουμε σκληρά μέχρι να βγει το σωστό αποτέλεσμα.

Ποια στιγμή κρατάτε στο νου σας ως τη σημαντικότερη από τα live σας;

LordNebulah: Ο ενθουσιασμός του κόσμου και το χειροκρότημα στο τέλος του playlist σίγουρα…

Tragon: Δεν μπορώ να σκεφτώ κάτι πέρα από αυτό που είπε και ο Lord Nebulah.

Ανταποκρίνεται το κοινό στο μουσικό σας κάλεσμα;

LordNebulah: Θαρρώ πως ναι.

Αν θα μπορούσατε να συνεργαστείτε με έναν μεγάλο καλλιτέχνη της Black metal σκηνής, ποιος θα ήταν αυτός και γιατί;

Tragon: Κοίταξε, έχουμε ήδη συνεργαστεί με τον Hellhammer και τον Knut M. Valle από Arcturus, οπότε κατά μια έννοια μας έχει φύγει αυτή η «ευχετηριακή κάψα» ας πούμε. Σαφώς και θέλουμε να συνεργαστούμε με άλλους μεγάλους μουσικούς, αλλά πλέον το σκεφτόμαστε καθαρά μουσικά και επειδή –από ότι έχω καταλάβει- για τους περισσότερους είναι θέμα χρόνου παρά θέλησης, πιστεύω ότι θα μπορέσουμε να το κάνουμε. Προσωπικά για το δεύτερο album θα ήθελα τη φωνή του Seth από Septic Flesh σε ένα κομμάτι. Όταν έρθει εκείνη η ώρα θα το κυνηγήσουμε…

Lord Nebulah: Αντίστοιχα θα ήθελα να έχω τον Nemtheanga των Primordial στη φωνή σε κάποιο τραγούδι μας…

Ποια είναι τα σχέδια σας για το μέλλον;

Tragon: Αυτή τη στιγμή που μιλάμε ήδη μιξάρουμε ένα νέο EP που υπολογίζουμε να βγει Σεπτέμβρη ή Οκτώβρη και θα λέγεται «The Serpent Seal– Το Αρχέγονο Σκότος Επιστρέφει». Αμέσως μετά θα αρχίσουμε να ηχογραφούμε το δεύτερο album μας με τίτλο «In Full Regalia». Παράλληλα κάνουμε εντατικές πρόβες και αν όλα πάνε καλά όλο και κάπου θα μας δείτε επί σκηνής.

Πως μπορεί το κοινό να προμηθευτεί τα cd και πως μπορεί να ενημερωθεί σχετικά με τα νέα της μπάντας;

Tragon:  Στο site μας http://www.lordimpaler.com υπάρχουν όλες οι πληροφορίες. Μπορεί κανείς είτε να παραγγείλει online είτε να έρθει σε επικοινωνία μαζί μας και να το κανονίσουμε. Ακόμα υπάρχουν linksγια όλα τα online outpostsπου έχουμε στο internetγια ενημέρωση κ.λπ.

Ο τραγουδιστής των Lord Impaler, Tragon, παραχώρησε μια εφ’ολης της ύλης συνέντευξη στο Rock Overdose, όπου και αποκάλυψε πολλά σημαντικά νέα για το Καστοριανό συγκρότημα!

Rock Overdose: Καλησπέρα Άλεξ. Αρχικά να σε καλωσορίσω στο Rock Overdose. Ευχαριστώ για τον χρόνο σου!

Tragon: “Καλησπέρα και σε σένα Δημήτρη!”

Rock Overdose: Έχουν περάσει τρία χρόνια από την κυκλοφορία του Admire the Cosmos Black. Τι ανταπόκριση δεχθήκατε από τον κόσμο μέσα σε αυτό το διάστημα;

Tragon: “Δεδομένης της ελαχιστότατης εμπειρίας που είχαμε νομίζω ότι γενικά πήγε καλά το “Admire”, ο κόσμος που το άκουσε σίγουρα γουστάρει αυτό που κάνουμε.”

Rock Overdose: Ήταν πολλοί αυτοί που περίμεναν μια ολοκληρωμένη δουλειά σας και πραγματικά, κανένας πια δεν μπορεί να αμφισβητήσει ότι το “Admire” είναι ένα αριστούργημα. Πριν από ένα μήνα, όμως, υπογράψατε με μια Αμερικανική δισκογραφική εταιρία, την «Unmerciful Death Productions» για την επανακυκλοφορία του. Δώσε μας μερικές πληροφορίες σχετικά με αυτή την συμφωνία σας.

Tragon: “Το A.T.C.B. ουσιαστικά το κυκλοφορήσαμε μόνοι μας, οπότε τόσο η προώθηση όσο και η διανομή έπασχαν σημαντικά. Όταν λοιπόν μας πλησίασε η Unmerciful Death θεωρήσαμε ότι ήταν μια καλή ευκαιρία ο δίσκος να φτάσει επιτέλους και στην Αμερική με τις δυνατότητες που έχει μια εταιρία για να το προωθήσει. Η συμφωνία είναι να βγει αρχικά σε CD και αργότερα και σε βινύλιο, ενώ ανάλογα με τις πωλήσεις δεν αποκλείεται να συνεχίσουμε την συνεργασία μας και για άλλες κυκλοφορίες.”

 Rock Overdose: Το CD έχει επανατυπωθεί, πότε να περιμένουμε το βινύλιο;

Tragon: “Νομίζω μέσα στο 6μηνο, αν και αυτό το κανονίζει η UDp και δεν περνάει καθόλου από τα χέρια μας.”

Rock Overdose: Εκτός όμως από αυτή την επανακυκλοφορία, μαθαίνουμε ότι είστε στα πρόθυρα να κυκλοφορήσετε ένα EP επετειακού χαρακτήρα με τίτλο “ΤΟ ΑΡΧΕΓΟΝΟ ΣΚΟΤΟΣ ΕΠΙΣΤΡΕΦΕΙ”. Θες να μας μιλήσεις γι’αυτό;

Tragon: “Ο πλήρης τίτλος του είναι The Serpent Seal – Το Αρχέγονο Σκότος Επιστρέφει. Ουσιαστικά πρόκειται για μια κυκλοφορία που ετοιμάσαμε για να γιορτάσουμε τα 15 χρόνια από την πρώτη μας demo κυκλοφορία. Θα περιλαμβάνει τα κομμάτια Dying, Final Gates, Travel Through Abyss καιAdmire The Cosmos Black από τα 3 πρώτα μας demo. Αυτή τη στιγμή το EP ήδη μιξάρεται στα Strype Audio της Νορβηγίας από τον Tom Kvallsvol.”

Rock Overdose: Δηλαδή είναι επαναηχογραφημένα, σωστά;

Tragon: “Ναι, όλα έχουν ηχογραφηθεί από την αρχή και από τα πρώτα δείγματα που πήραμε από τον Tom μπορώ να πώ ότι ο ήχος τους θα σπέρνει!!!”

Rock Overdose: Είναι νωρίς για να μιλήσουμε για ημερομηνία κυκλοφορίας ή έχετε σχεδιάσει περίπου πότε θα βγει;

Tragon: “Ακόμα δεν έχουμε την τελική μίξη στα χέρια μας, οπότε είναι νωρίς για ανακοινώσεις.”

Rock Overdose: Καλώς. Θέλω να σε πάω κάπου αλλού. 15 χρόνια Lord Impaler. Πες μου την καλύτερη και την χειρότερη στιγμή που έζησες με την μπάντα.

Tragon: “Η καλύτερη μάλλον ήταν όταν πήγα στη Νορβηγία για την μίξη του Admire The Cosmos Black, γιατί ήταν η στιγμή που πολλά όνειρα γίνονταν πραγματικότητα μαζί. Η χειρότερη πρέπει να ήταν κάπου στο 2002 όταν φτάσαμε ένα κλικ πριν βαρέσουμε διάλυση, αλλά ευτυχώς μαζέψαμε τους εαυτούς μας οι λίγοι που ήμασταν αποφασισμένοι να συνεχίσουμε και όλα πήγαν καλά αν και μας πήρε αρκετό καιρό να ορθοποδίσουμε…”

Rock Overdose: Σχετικά με τη διάλυση, η μικρή κοινωνία της Καστοριάς έπαιξε ρόλο ώστε να φτάσετε σε αυτό το σημείο;

Tragon: “‘Όχι, τα προβλήματα τότε ήταν κυρίως προσωπικές και μουσικές διαφορές μεταξύ μας. Μην ξεχνάς ότι το 2001 είχαμε στις τάξεις μας 7 μέλη με εντελώς διαφορετικό background και δεν υπήρχε κοινό όραμα για το που θέλουμε να πάμε σαν γκρουπ.”

Rock Overdose: Θα ήθελα να μείνω όμως στην Καστοριά. Πόσο δύσκολο είναι μια μέταλ μπάντα κατ’αρχας να επιβιώσει και μετ’επειτα να πετύχει τους στόχους της σε μια τόσο μικρή πόλη; Σε ρωτώ γιατί είσαι ο πλέον κατάλληλος να απαντήσεις, μιας και όπως είπαμε πιο πάνω, σε λίγο καιρό θα γιορτάσετε τα 15 χρόνια ζωής σας!

Tragon: “Κοίταξε, αν υπάρχει θέληση τίποτα δεν είναι ακατόρθωτο, ειδικά τώρα που υπάρχουν τα εργαλεία για να σταθεί μια μπάντα μόνη της στα πόδια της και να κάνει τη δουλειά της γνωστή όπου κι αν βρίσκεται. Φυσικά θα ήταν ψέμα να πω ότι δεν υπάρχουν δυσκολίες. Σε μια μικρή πόλη είναι πιο λίγοι οι οπαδοί και οι μουσικοί και αυτό δημιουργεί πολλά προβλήματα, ευτυχώς όχι αξεπέραστα!”

Rock Overdose: Μπορώ να πω ότι με κάλυψες πλήρως. Τώρα, σε ότι αφορά το δεύτερο full-length άλμπουμ, ακούγεται πως θα φέρει τον τίτλο “In Full Regalia”. Βρίσκετε σε προχωρημένο στάδιο ή απλά το έχετε στην άκρη του μυαλού σας;

Tragon: “Το In Full Regalia είναι σχεδόν 100% έτοιμο όσον αφορά τη συγγραφή των τραγουδιών. Σε λίγο καιρό θα αρχίσουμε τις ηχογραφήσεις του. Θα περιλαμβάνει 8 κομμάτια συνολικής διάρκειας περίπου 45 λεπτών. Οι τίτλοι των τραγουδιών είναι Genesis, Devour The Divine, The White Dream of Ziz, Babylon Whore, The Fall of Man, A Fire That Burns, Howling at the Sea και The Last With Prophetic Blood.”

Rock Overdose: Να υποθέσω ότι στο πίσω μέρος του μυαλού σας έχετε την Νορβηγία είτε για ηχογραφήσεις, είτε για μίξη και mastering;

Tragon: “Για ηχογραφήσεις μάλλον θα κινηθούμε στην πεπατημένη, στα δικά μας studios. Για mix/master όμως ναι, είναι στο μπροστά όχι στο πίσω μέρος του μυαλού μας. Καλώς ή κακώς οι Νορβηγοί είναι πολύ μπροστά σε αυτό το κομμάτι και έχουν πιο ελκυστικές τιμές παρότι σαν χώρα είναι πολύ πιο ακριβή. Και αυτό είναι κάτι που θα πρέπει να μας προβληματίσει.”

Rock Overdose: Αυτό που λες είναι σημαντικό. Άρα να υποθέσω ότι οι σχέσεις σας με την Σκανδιναβία και πιο συγκεκριμένα με την Νορβηγία είναι εξαιρετικές από την στιγμή που ηχογραφήσατε το Admire μέχρι και σήμερα.

Tragon: “Ναι, είναι μια επιδίωξή μας να έχουμε ανοιχτές πόρτες εκεί γιατί έχουμε δει στην πράξη τι μπορούν να κάνουν αυτοί οι άνθρωποι για εμάς, και φυσικά ξέρουμε ότι δεν θα μας στοιχήσει πιο ακριβά απο ότι αν κάναμε τη δουλειά στην Ελλάδα…”

Rock Overdose: Φάκελος lives. Έχετε μπει για τα καλά στο στούντιό σας και “λιώνετε” στις πρόβες. Αυτό είναι ένα σημάδι ότι μπορεί να σας δούμε ζωντανά στο σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα;

Tragon: “Ναι, είναι κάτι που το κυνηγάμε. Δεν ξέρω αν θα μας κάτσει φέτος κάτι αλλά σίγουρα το θέλουμε πολύ. Παρόλα αυτά, είναι πολύ σημαντικό για εμάς, και λόγω της μεγάλης πορείας που έχουμε στον χώρο, θέλουμε να παρουσιάσουμε κάτι καλό, οπότε προσπαθούμε να είμαστε 100% έτοιμοι και να μην κάνουμε τσαπατσουλιές μόνο και μόνο για να βρεθούμε πάνω σε μια σκηνή.”

Rock Overdose: Έχω ακούσει πως έχετε παίξει λαιβ σε ένα βουνό. Ισχύει;

Tragon: “Ναι, πριν πολλά πολλά χρόνια, χαχαχα!”

Rock Overdose: Θες να μας περιγράψεις εκείνη τη βραδιά ή θα προτιμούσες να κλείσουμε αλλιώς αυτή την πραγματικά απολαυστική συνέντευξη;

Tragon: “Ήταν ένα χαρακτηριστικό δείγμα ελληνικής ανοργανωσιάς, παρόλα αυτά ήταν μια καλή εμπειρία για εμάς σε πολλά επίπεδα. Δεν θα ήθελα ωστόσο να επεκταθώ. Έχουν περάσει πάνω από δέκα χρόνια από τότε…”

Rock Overdose: Νομίζω ότι καλύψαμε σχεδόν τα πάντα. Από μεριάς μου να σε ευχαριστήσω άλλη μια φορά για τον χρόνο σου και να σας ευχηθώ να παν όλα κατ’ευχήν! Τέλος, θα ήθελα να στείλεις ένα μήνυμα σε όλους τους αναγνώστες του Rock Overdose!

Tragon: “Στηρίξτε τις τοπικές σας μπάντες. Μπορεί να ακούγεται κοινότυπο αλλά πρέπει να το κάψουμε όλοι στο πίσω μέρος του μυαλού μας και να το έχουμε για πάντα εκεί. «Στηρίξτε τις τοπικές σας μπάντες»! Δεν θα το κάνει κανείς άλλος για εσάς. Αν δεν το κάνουμε όλοι αυτό, όταν οι δεινόσαυροι του μέταλ φύγουν δεν θα υπάρχει πια σκηνή και δεν θα υπάρχουν πια μπάντες…Σε ευχαριστώ για τον χρόνο και για το ενδιαφέρον σου για τους Lord Impaler. The Place Where Underground Reigns !!!

Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Lord Impaler were formed back in 1998. We have released 4 demos, 2 splits (one of them is also available as a digital EP) and one full length album. The current line-up is: Tragon (vocals), Lord Nebulah (guitars), Phlegethon (bass), Nodens (drums) and Aenaon (guitars).

How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music? 
We play melodic black metal. A lot of people think we are similar to Dissection or old Gehenna and I don’t disagree with that. The bands that mostly influenced us are Marduk, Dark Funeral, Emperor, Satyricon and Immortal.

Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
Obviously because they will like them. Honestly though, we do this mostly by ourselves and we do it with our own money. We have day jobs, we have real lives, and sometimes it is hard to keep up with the expenses of a band. So if you like our music the best way to support us is buy our CDs, buy our shirts, come to our shows. As simple as that.

What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media? 
We have done 4 demos, “The Lord Impaler” in 1999, “Twilight Wander” in 2001, “Promo 2005” and “Demo 2009”, which are a good indication of what we were doing at that times, we have a 4 way vinyl split, “The Ascending Novelty” along with Nethescerial, The Eternal Darkness and Crossover, back in 2008. This one never got much attention from the press. In 2011 we released our debut album “Admire The Cosmos Black” which features Hellhammer (Mayhem) on drums. It got very good reviews and was recently re-issued by a small American label (Unmerciful Death prod.). Finally, in 2013 we released a digital EP called “Babylon Whore”, which got a lot of our fans excited about our new music and so we later released it in physical format as a split-CDR with another Greek band, Athos.

Do you play live as well? How’s your live activity so far?
We have done two shows in the past but we haven’t played at all over the last decade, mainly due to line-up problems. Currently we are rehearsing a lot and hopefully we will do a few shows this year.

What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
We aren’t just another gibberish lo-fi black metal band. We have a certain quality and we aren’t sacrificing that for whatever reason. And we are certainly here to stay! We have a lot of music in the works and we aren’t going to quit anytime soon.

What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
We are currently mixing an anniversary EP for the 15 years since our first demo release. It is called “The Serpent Seal – Το Αρχέγονο Σκότος Επιστρέφει”. Right after we get this done we will begin recording our second full length album “In Full Regalia”.

Quite recently Tragon had a conversation with Scott Adams of Metal As Fuck zine. Here goes:

MaF: All things metal

You don’t have to be a ‘young’ band to flourish outside the normal boundaries of ‘the record industry’. Greek black metallers Lord Impaler have been around for sixteen years on the outer…

When we decided to turn the Metal as Fuck spotlight on bands without a record deal, we originally envisaged giving a leg up, profile-wise, to some young up-and-coming artists, maybe even bringing them to the attentions of labels looking for young talent. But that’s only one side of the areas we were looking at highlighting, and Greek black metal act Lord Impaler neatly represent that other side, where bands function perfectly well without succumbing to the machine. I had a chat with band mainman Tragon about the band’s long, sometimes difficult journey…

Greetings Tragon. Tell us a bit about your role within Lord Impaler.

“I am vocalist and lyricist of the band. I also handle our PR, code our websites and create graphics for the band”.

Who else is in the band?

“Lord Nebulah (guitars and sound engineering on our recordings), Phlegethon (bass), Nodens (drums) and Aenaon (guitars)”.

And how long have you been together as a going concern?

“Sixteen years”.

Blimey, that’s a pretty good innings by anyone’s standards. How many releases have you put out in that time?

“We have released 4 demos (The Lord Impaler in1999, Twilight Wander  which came out in 2001, Promo in 2005 and Demo in 2009), a 4-way vinyl split (The Ascending Novelty, 2008) plus a full length album (Admire the Cosmos Black, 2011) and a digital EP (Babylon Whore, 2013) which was later made available in physical CD as a split with another Greek band”.

So, reasonably prolific then. Being that you’ve been extant as a band for so long, you’ll appreciate better than most that the nature of being ‘unsigned’ has changed over that period. How important do you think record companies are in today’s modern world of social media et cetera?

“Record companies managed to render themselves irrelevant. After the music model shifted they are too scared to take any risks. They now require –even train- us to be able to sell thousands of records before they sign a band, but then what use are they for a band that can produce a record, market it and sell a few thousand copies by themselves?”.

Good question, and a question that more and more bands seem to be finding the answer to in their own self-sufficiency! To extend that topic a little further, how important is any of the ‘traditional’ impedimenta of the record industry in 2014? Are band managers, distro companies, merch companies and PR reps just other means by which a band can lose money or does each separate part of the machine still have something to offer the unsigned band?

“It really depends on where exactly you stand as a band. For a band that tours the world a manager is sure going to help keep track of everything. For a band that releases music often, a PR firm is sure going to make a difference in building a campaign. These are now mostly building blocks that you can tailor to your needs, not the one and only goal that being signed to a label used to be 20 years ago”.

An interesting angle to take. Given that you yourself handle the band’s PR, what would you say have been the most effective means of spreading the Lord Impaler message to a wider audience?

“Music reviews created the most impressive spikes of traffic for us”.

So organs such as Metal as Fuck still have a part to play in the brave new world? Hallelujah! What about the least effective method’s you’ve found?

“I would say either our twitter feed or posters. I cannot decide which performs worse!”

You manage yourselves, how much time in every week do you spend engaged in the rather dull, non-playing activities that band managers love so much?

“When we don’t have any particular news items to work on we spend around 10-15 hours on mail correspondence, handling orders and PR. When we release new music this usually goes around 40 hours a week”.

40 hours a week! That’s more than a full time job these days in many places… Don’t let anyone tell you being in a band is all fun. Although I suspect you knew that already! Now, here’s an opportunity to let our readers in on what you are up to at the moment – plug away!

“We are currently mixing an anniversary EP for the 15 years since the release of our very first demo recording. It is called The Serpent Seal and contains re-recordings of 4 songs from our demo era. Right after we release this EP we are going to begin recording our second full length album In Full Regalia which contains 8 songs of total duration around 45 minutes”.

-Οι LORD IMPALER ιδρύθηκαν το 1998 στην Καστοριά. Έχουμε κυκλοφορήσει από τότε τέσσερα demo, τα The Lord Impaler ( 1999), Twilight Wander (2001), Promo 2005 (2005) και Demo 2009 (2009), ένα four-way-split ονόματι The Ascending Novelty (με τις ελληνικές μπάντες CROSSOVER, NETHESCERIAL και THE ETERNAL DARKNESS) το 2008, το ντεμπούτο μας Admire The Cosmos Black το 2011 και προσφάτως κάναμε και ένα EP, το Babylon Whore το οποίο αρχικά είχαμε προγραμματίσει να είναι διαθέσιμο μόνο digital αλλά στην πορεία βγήκε και σε CD (ως split με τους έλληνες ATHOS) αλλά και σε κασέτα από την γαλλική Infernal Kommando records. Αυτή την περίοδο δουλεύουμε πάνω στο δεύτερο ολοκληρωμένο μας album που θα τιτλοφορείται In Full Regalia, ενώ ετοιμάζουμε και ένα επετειακό EP για να γιορτάσουμε τα 15 χρόνια από την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου μας demo.

-Με την μουσική ασχολούμαστε ουσιαστικά από πιτσιρίκια. Ήμασταν τότε μια παρέα φίλων που ακούγαμε όλοι metal και θέλαμε να παίζουμε μουσική όπως έκαναν και τα είδωλά μας, και κατά καιρούς φτιάχναμε γκρουπάκια και παίζαμε. Σε κάποια φάση λίγο πριν τελειώσουμε το λύκειο είχαμε λίγο-πολύ κατασταλάξει σε ποιο είδος μουσικής ήμασταν «ταγμένοι» οπότε και δημιουργήσαμε τους Lord Impaler με την απόφαση να παίξουμε black/death metal.

ΠΟΙΑ ΤΑ ΜΟΥΣΙΚΑ ΣΑΣ ΕΡΕΘΙΣΜΑΤΑ . ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΕΠΙΡΡΟΕΣ ΣΑΣ ΑΠΟ ΑΛΛΕΣ ΜΠΑΝΤΕΣ ;

-Το σκανδιναβικό παραδοσιακό black metal είναι ουσιαστικά η μεγαλύτερη επιρροή μας. Όλο εκείνο το κύμα του ’93-’95 με μπάντες όπως Emperor, Satyricon, Dark Funeral, Marduk έπαιξαν τεράστιο ρόλο στα μουσικά μας γούστα και κατ’ επέκταση και στο ύφος της μπάντας.

4) ΕΙΝΑΙ ΚΑΙΡΟΣ ΤΩΡΑ ΠΟΥ ΒΛΕΠΟΥΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ BLACK ( ΓΕΝΙΚΑ ΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ METAL ) ΣΚΗΝΗ ΝΑ ΑΝΘΙΖΕΙ ΠΑΛΙ ΠΙΑ Η ΓΝΩΜΗ ΣΟΥ ; ΚΑΙ ΤΙ ΘΑ ΗΘΕΛΕΣ ΝΑ ΠΕΙΣ ΣΕ ΟΣΟΥΣ ΘΕΩΡΟΥΝ ΤΗΝ METAL ”ΣΑΤΑΝΙΣΤΙΚΗ”.

-Προσωπικά δεν θυμάμαι ποτέ την ελληνική σκηνή να περνάει κρίση. Είχαμε πάντα πολλές και ποιοτικές μπάντες και απλά τώρα πια που είναι πιο εύκολο για τον κάθε μουσικό να κάνει αξιοπρεπείς δουλειές χωρίς να χρειάζεται μια μεγάλη εταιρία από πίσω υπάρχει μια άνευ προηγουμένου μουσική έκρηξη. Φυσικά και είμαι χαρούμενος γι αυτό όπως νομίζω οφείλουμε να είμαστε όλοι οι μεταλλάδες… Όσο για το δεύτερο σκέλος, η black metal υπήρξε σατανική από τα γεννοφάσκια της, και νομίζω ότι παραμένει αλλά υπό μια ευρύτερη πλέον έννοια: ξεπέρασε τα όρια του σατανά ως υπαρκτού και μόνου εκπροσώπου του «κακού» και πλέον περιλαμβάνει κάθε είδους αντίδραση σε ξεπεσμένους θεούς και ξεπερασμένες «αξίες». Στο μυαλό μου, ναι, είναι μια σατανιστική μουσική και παρότι δεν είμαι σατανιστής δεν με ενοχλεί ότι και αν πιστεύουν οι άλλοι για μένα και το ιδίωμα που υπηρετώ…

5) ΠΟΣΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΑ ΜΕΛΗ ΤΗΣ ΜΠΑΝΤΑΣ ;

-Η μπάντα αποτελείται από πέντε μέλη, τους Tragon (φωνή), Lord Nebulah (κιθάρες), Phlegethon (μπάσο), Nodens (τύμπανα) και Aenaon (κιθάρες).

6) ΣΕ ΑΥΤΟ ΤΟ ΣΗΜΕΙΟ ΘΑ ΗΘΕΛΑ ΝΑ ΜΟΥ ΠΕΙΤΕ ΤΙΣ ΜΟΥΣΙΚΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΙΔΕΟΛΟΓΙΚΕΣ ΕΠΙΡΡΟΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΜΠΑΝΤΑΣ !!

-Για τη μουσική τα είπαμε, τώρα για το ιδεολογικό κομμάτι, οι στίχοι μας επικεντρώνονται κυρίως γύρω από την φιλοσοφία, τον αντιχριστιανισμό, τις αρχαιοελληνικές παραδόσεις και σπανίως (ωστόσο δεν λείπουν) επικές ιστορίες. Οτιδήποτε άλλο μας απασχολεί σαν ανθρώπους συνήθως μένει απ’ έξω, οι LORD IMPALER είναι ένα κανάλι για να εξωτερικεύουμε μόνο αυτά που προανέφερα…

7) ΘΑ ΗΘΕΛΑ ΝΑ ΜΑΣ ΠΕΙΤΕ ΤΑ ΣΧΕΔΙΑ ΣΑΣ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΜΕΛΛΟΝ ΚΑΙ ΠΟΤΕ ΝΑ ΠΕΡΙΜΕΝΟΥΜΕ ΚΑΙ ΝΟΥΡΓΙΑ ΔΟΥΛΕΙΑ ;

-Το επετειακό μας EP που θα λέγεται The Serpent Seal θέλω να πιστεύω ότι θα κυκλοφορήσει πριν το καλοκαίρι. Όσο για τον επόμενο δίσκο, τα κομμάτια είναι σχεδόν έτοιμα αλλά έχει πολύ δουλειά ακόμα μπροστά του. Θα αρχίσουμε τις ηχογραφήσεις μετά την κυκλοφορία του EP και βλέπουμε πως θα πάει…

-Νομίζω πως είναι λίγο απ’ όλα: αν δεν υπήρχαν οι «κανόνες» δεν θα είχε εξελιχθεί σε αυτό που είναι σήμερα. Βέβαια οι κανόνες μπορούν να σπάσουν και αυτή είναι η ομορφιά της metal μουσικής. Είναι οπωσδήποτε ψυχή: ένα τόσο αντιεμπορικό και απαιτητικό ιδίωμα θέλει να το αγαπάς στ’ αλήθεια για να μπορέσεις να το ακολουθήσεις. Και φυσικά μέσα από τις συγκεκριμένες ατμόσφαιρες που δημιουργεί αυτό το είδος θεωρώ ότι έχει και κάποιας μορφής ενέργεια. Για κάποιους μπορεί αυτή να είναι αρνητική, για εμάς πάντως που μας βοήθησε στα δύσκολα σίγουρα κάτι θετικό έχει αφήσει στη ζωή μας…

Με δικα τους εξοδα εκαναν το πρωτο τους αλμπουμ στο οποιο την παραγωγη την εκανε ο Knut M. Valle απο Arcturus ενω επαιξε τυμπανα ο Hellhammer / Mayhem – Arcturus / Πηγαν οι ιδιοι στην Νορβηγια και το αποτελεσμα ειναι φανταστικο !!!
Αξιζουν πολλα και ειναι δυναμη για την Ελληνικη μουσικη σκηνη .
Ο ηχος τους σκληρος οι στιχοι τους σκληροι αλλα και με μια διαθεση ”ποιητικη” θα ελεγα .
Πραγματικα ειναι απο τις μπαντες που σε κανουν να λες ”ευχαριστω που εισαστε εδω … και σε γεμιζουν με περηφανεια μεσα απο την δουλεια τους !!!.

Q:    How did the band get started?
Tragon:    We started back in 1998 as a bunch of guys who wanted to be like their music idols. One thing led to another and soon we found ourselves writing our own music, releasing demos and pretty much being a proper band…

Q:   What kind of music do you play?
Tragon:    We play black metal. Melodic and with an old school air to be more specific.

Q:   How has the fan response been?
Tragon: Our fans have embraced us ever since the first days of the band, and I just can’t thank them enough for that. It gives us great strength to know that what we do means something to people out there.

Q:   Where did the band name come from?
Tragon:    The name LORD IMPALER is actually a nickname of Vlad Tepes, aka Dracula. We first encountered it in MARDUK’s album “Nightwing” and we thought it was a really good name for a black metal band.

Q:    Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.
Tragon:    The current line-up is: Tragon (vocals), Lord Nebulah (guitars), Phlegethon (bass), Nodens (drums) and Aenaon (guitars).

Q:    Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Tragon:    The majority of the music is written by Lord Nebulah, but everyone contributes with parts and ideas here and there. The lyrics are mostly my job, but again anyone else can come up with something good.

Q:    And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Tragon: My lyrics are the result of everyday philosophizing about life, it’s meaning, it’s origins. Whenever I have lingering thoughts about gods, antichristianity, ancient Hellenic pride, or anything that touches on those subjects, I will transform my ideas to lyrics for the band. My main source of inspiration are books and of course thought provoking talks with friends.

Q:   What is your view in Satanism and Occultism?
Tragon: I am not a Satanist and also not much involved with the occult. They are –for me- just another form of seeking the truth or finding a meaning in order to live a better life. They are pretty valueless for me just as any other religion, I just have them a little closer to my heart because they challenge the typical values and morals, and that is always a good thing. Lyrically I refer to Satan as a non-personified will to oppose God, even if that is just the will of a godless man…

Q:    How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Tragon: We have released one full length album, “Admire the Cosmos Black” in 2011, a 4-way split called “The Ascending Novelty” in 2008 (available only in vinyl), 4 demos, “The Lord Impaler” in 1999, “Twilight Wander” in 2001, “Promo 2005” in 2005 and “Demo 2009” in 2009, and in July 2013 we released a digital EP called “Babylon Whore” which was recently  made available as a split CD with ATHOS.

Q:   Tell me about some the songs on the latest CD?
Tragon: Babylon Whore contains two songs from our second full length album, “In Full Regalia”, which is on the making. The songs are “Babylon Whore” and “The White Dream of Ziz” and they are fast paced, melodic and quite aggressive. Lyrically the second album is a journey from challenging the gods and idols that others forced us to believe, to exploring and finally believing  in ourselves. Those two songs are part of this journey.

Q:    Do you have any side projects?
Tragon: Only Nodens has a personal band called NORTH GATE and he also plays in PROMETHEUS and KULT OF TAURUS.

Q:    Who are some of your musical influences?
Tragon: We all have different musical tastes and probably different influences, but we do have a common love for traditional black metal.

Q:    Which current bands?
Tragon: BURZUM, DARKTHRONE, DARK FUNERAL, EMPEROR, GEHENNA, SATYRICON to name a few.

Q:    What is the band like when you play live?
Tragon: We haven’t played live for a lot of time now (last show was in 2000), so I can’t answer that in all honesty. We are planning to play live this year and we are rehearsing a lot, but we can’t really tell how it is going to be on the actual stage.

Q:    Have you guys ever played in another country?
Tragon: Nope.

Q:    How big of crowd shows up at shows usually?
Tragon: Our only shows were at festivals, so people weren’t really there for us. We will have to wait and see…

Q:    How is the crowd response when you play?
Tragon: Same as above.

Q:    What do you think of the US Black Metal/Death Metal scene?
Tragon: Well, I am not a huge fan of death metal and certainly I prefer the European death metal style. There are only a handful of US death bands I really enjoy, like VITAL REMAINS and DEICIDE. On the other hand, the US black metal scene is easily one of the top 5 in my head. There are so many awesome and unique bands, from AGALLOCH to FALLS OF RAUROS, from ABSU to LURKER OF CHALICE, from DECEMBER WOLVES to WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, from JUDAS ISCARIOT to XASTHUR, everyone of them has something to offer and they all come with a great taste and quality. I do love the USBM scene!

Q:    What do you think of the Overseas scenes?
Tragon: Most of them lack the technical skills to actually stand as equals to the European and US scenes, but they are more raw and powerful and spirited, and that somewhat makes up for it. The only overseas scene that really stands out for me is the Australian, with some really hot bands, like ASTRIAAL, BE’LAKOR and WOODS OF DESOLATION.

Q:    What are some of new favorite black metal/death metal bands?
Tragon: These last months I am mostly into Greek black metal, so I probably missed a lot of what is hot in the outside world. The bands that are usually in rotation lately are HAIL SPIRIT NOIR, VIGOUR and DIABLERY, all of them from Greece. Oh, and DEN SAAKALDTE from Norway.

Q:    When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Tragon: We are constantly writing new music. We have a new album in the works and whatever ideas may come until we release this one are also processed and stored for the future.

Q:   What does the future hold for the band??
Tragon: We plan to release an anniversary EP for the 15 years since the release of our first demo in the following months. We call it “The Serpent Seal – Το αρχέγονο σκότος επιστρέφει”, and right after that we will begin recording our follow up album “In Full Regalia”. Hopefully we will be ready to hit some stages too this summer…

2013 September: Tragon @ Behind The Veil ‘zine

Q: When was LORD IMPALER formed? How did you come up with the band’s name?

A: LORD IMPALER were created in 1998 and when we weren’t struggling with the line-up changes we usually released music. The most notable releases are “The Ascending Novelty” (a 4-way vinyl split we did with NETHESCERIAL, CROSSOVER and THE ETERNAL DARKNESS), “Admire The Cosmos Black” (our debut album) and the recent “Babylon Whore” (EP/split with ATHOS). The name LORD IMPALER was taken from MARDUK’s song “Kaziklu Bey” because it sounded like a good black metal band name and also because we all liked the story of Vlad Tepes, the Impaler.

Q: Which are your basic influences as a band and as a musician?

A: We all listen to different stuff and so carry different influences, but we do have a common love for old school melodic black metal. Bands like EMPEROR, DARK FUNERAL, old GEHENNA are something we all enjoy. When it comes to vocals, I personally admire Attila Csihar for constantly going outside his comfort zone and trying new stuff with his voice, and Satyr for the way he builds his lines.

Q: Which are the future plans of LORD IMPALER? Are there any plans to release a new full length album or plans for a tour?

A: We are actually working on our second full length album “In Full Regalia”. We have 8 songs ready with a duration somewhere around 45 minutes. The track listing –in no particular order- is “Genesis”, “Devour the Divine”, “The White Dream of Ziz”, “Babylon Whore”, “The Fall of Man”, “A Fire That Burns”, “Howling at the Sea”, “The Last with Prophetic Blood”. Of course nothing is set in stone yet and we may change things as we go…

Q: Tell us some things about the other bands that the band members of LORD IMPALER have played in.

A: At this point most of the other bands and projects have been disbanded. The only active ones are the personal band of Nodens called NORTH GATE and the bands he also contributes such as PROMETHEUS and KULT OF TAURUS.

Q: Does LORD IMPALER have an official site and/or a Facebook page from where the fans can buy stuff and be informed about your news?

A: We have a website at http://www.lordimpaler.com and many online outlets that can be reached through it. Our Facebook page is http://www.facebook.com/Lordimpalerband. We also have a bandcamp page at http://lordimpaler.bandcamp.com where you can stream or buy our music, and a merchandize page at http://lordimpaler.totomerch.com.

Q:  Which stuff is commercially available right now from LORD IMPALER? Tell us some things about your new release; “Babylon Whore”.

A: The available releases are “Admire the Cosmos Black” which is available on CD and it will be re-issued in both CD and vinyl by Unmerciful Death productions, “The Ascending Novelty” is available in 10” vinyl, and of course the new EP “Babylon Whore” which is available as a digital release through our bandcamp page, and in CD-R format as a split with ATHOS. It will also be released in cassette tape by the French Infernal Kommando Records. “Babylon Whore” contains two new songs that will also appear in our second full length, its duration is about 10 minutes. The drums on this specific release where tracked by George Trakas (MASS INFECTION) and it was mixed and mastered by George Stournaras.

Q: Why did you choose to release this split CD, “Babylon Whore”, with ATHOS by yourselves?

A: Mainly for two reasons: we wanted to try out some new distribution options since we tend to do DIY releases anyway, and we also didn’t want to spend much time seeking for a publisher for this release. We wanted it to close the gap between the debut and the follow up album, so we needed to have better control of when we were going to release it.

Q: Tell us some things about the lyrics of LORD IMPALER, about your great logo and about the covers of your releases.

A: Our lyrics are mainly antichristian, though we also touch a bit of ancestral worship and epic stories. I get inspired by pretty much everything and I note down lots of ideas, but there is a filter in the back of my head and you will probably never see lyrics in LORD IMPALER outside those three topics. We are a black metal band after all! Our logo was made by George Sbonias, he did an amazing job there! As for the covers of our releases, we want them to be appropriate for what we do: to have the old black metal aesthetics, to radiate our vision for each specific release, and to be of high quality. We want people to see a LORD IMPALER release and even if someone judges from the cover alone, to know that this is some pure black metal and it is probably going to be a good one too!

Q: Give us a catalogue of the unofficial releases that the band had (demos, promos, etc). Is it possible to re-release some of them in the future?

A: We have “The Lord Impaler” demo of 1998, the “Twilight Wander” demo of 2001, the “Promo 2005” of 2005 and lastly our “Demo 2009” of 2009. We are actually planning to re-record some of those demo tracks and release them as an anniversary EP this year (which marks the 15 years of existence of LORD IMPALER). Again nothing is set in stone as we tend to work on what is important for the band at any given time, but if we find some free time, this is on the “to-do” list…

Q: How are things for extreme metal nowadays?

A: I think the extreme metal is in its best state right now. It is easier than ever to make good productions and this helped all kinds of ideas to evolve and get out there. On the other hand, I also see a lot of nostalgia for the old school. Many bands are going back to the roots and just give it a new life with modern sound and all the advancements these genres have mustered. So I think there is a huge crop and a good one too, in all extreme metal genres.

Q: Introduce us to some good new bands from Greece and tell us some things about them.

A: I am not a huge fan of death metal, but I do have a place in my little black heart for BLOOD ERECTION (a brutal death band from Kastoria), MASS INFECTION (tech death from Levadia) and DUSTYNATION (prog death from Thessaloniki). If you like OPETH you just CAN’T miss the last one. When it comes to black metal, the list is fucking huge. I will stay on just a few names that pop in my mind every time someone asks something like this: ATHOS (ancestral worship at its best by this one man band from Kalamata), THE ETERNAL DARKNESS (old school melodic black metal from Ioannina), DAWN OF DIVISION (melancholic/melodic black metal from Ioannina) and last but not least PROMETHEUS (melodic Hellenic black metal from Thessaloniki). This last one is highly recommended to fans of NOCTERNITY…

Q: Describe to us one of your live shows. Is it difficult to perform your stuff live?

A: Well, we haven’t played live for over a decade now, so that can’t be answered really. We recently completed our line up for the first time after the “Twilight Wander” era, and while we do practice a lot right now, I honestly don’t really know how it is going to be on a stage yet. There was a point just before the “Admire…” album where we started to simplify our music a bit, to be playable live. We weren’t sure we could hit a stage anytime soon, but we knew that missing 4 guitars up there would sound weird, so we took a different approach, more so on the second album. “In Full Regalia” is being written in this approach and although there are parts with 3 guitars, this can be covered in a live situation without the listener noticing.

Q: You recorded you first album“Admire the Cosmos Black” in Norway and the drums were recorded by Hellhammer (MAYHEM). Tell us some things about that!

A: We actually recorded “Admire…” in our home studio and just mixed and mastered it in Norway. Except for the drums, those were also recorded at Mølla Lydstudio were we mixed. When we decided to mix our album we started seeking for a good studio. We sent demos to studios both in- and outside of- Greece and when Knut M. Valle said he would like to work with us we just decided we couldn’t miss the opportunity to work with a top sound engineer, in a great studio, and also make one of our dreams come true: visit Norway. While we were arranging the details for the trip with Knut, Lord Nebulah asked –in a semi serious tone- if Hellhammer would possibly want to track the drums for us. We knew that Knut and Jan are friends, but we didn’t really expect it to happen. I mean this guy IS a legend. Knut said he would ask, and two days later Hellhammer said yes. The rest is history as they say…

Q: Do you think that the Internet has helped the bands by making their name known and “offering” samples of their music or has it harmed them because of free downloading of whole albums? If it is true that both happen, where does the balance hang out more?

A: It certainly helped them. When you are in the underground the enemy is not piracy but obscurity. Sure, when you do everything by yourself every lost sale is going to hurt financially, but when people don’t really know you they are probably not even going to illegally download your music. They have to care to get it first. Of course the game has shifted quite a lot lately, because the technology got cheaper, the information is mostly free, and bands left the labels out in the cold. You don’t really need a contract anymore to make an album. And this gave an opening to innovative ideas to blossom, like Bandcamp. This is the most helpful service for independent artists as it gives you all the tools to market and sell your music, without robbing you in the process.

Q: How has the press and the fans reacted to LORD IMPALER all these years?

A: Both the press and the fans have been really supportive. We have a loyal fan base and it gives me much joy to know that there are people out there who find value at what we do. It gives me the energy and motivation to keep going and never give up. I would like –given this opportunity- to thank each and every one who supported us throughout the years!
